De rodeowedstrijd Rock in Cher (Fr) gaat nog steeds niet door. Na de vorige annulatie had men gehoopt toelating te krijgen voor een nieuwe datum, nl. 8-9 april. Deze is er niet, dus geen RiC.

Rock in Cher (Fr) is off. After previous canceling there is still no authorization, so no RIC on the new date which was 8-9 april.
Due to damage on the dams, the French authority questions the safety of events taking place over there.

Varen dit weekend? Water is toch nogal laag, maar er zijn een paar leuke playspots te varen, bekijk de peilen.

Varen dit weekend? Het blijft regenen, dus zin om zondag te varen? Als er op de Ahr(D) in Müsch, minstens 75 à 80 cm staat, zou het leuk zijn om zondagmorgen naar de Erft in Neuss(playak.com) te gaan en in de namiddag naar de golf in Bad Neuenahr(playak.com) te gaan. Wij zijn daar dit seizoen nog niet geraakt en 't is nogthans eens de moeite.

Indien daar niet genoeg water staat, maar er staat wel minstens 200m³ op de Maas in Heer (Dinant), is Donchery(playak.com) de place to be.

Paddling next weekend? It's raining !!!!! If the water in Müsch(G) on the Ahr reaches at least 75cm, then the wave in Bad Neuenahr is on. Sunday morning the Erft(playak.com) in Neuss and Bad Neuenahr(playak.com) in the afternoon would be a great paddling program.

If  Bad Neuenahr isn't on, but the Meuse in Heer-Dinant (B) reaches 200m³ then Donchery(playak.com) would be the place to be.

De nieuwste modellen van Dagger zijn te bezichtigen op hun site, Dagger's R&D  designs for Spring 2000.... Met de Ultrafuge gaan ze verder in de richting van het radikale freestyle en rodeogebeuren, met natuurlijk het comfort van Dagger. Met de High Noon Series, Outlaw, richten ze zich meer op mensen die willen spelen, maar ook de zwaardere stukken varen. 

Ook de skandinavische site Freestylekayaker.com heeft zijn lijst van rodeobootjes aangevuld met de Dagger Centrifuge en Ultrafuge. Bekijk ook eens de eigenzinnige ontwerpen van Perception, nl. de Method, Shock, Amp???

New models by Dagger now online, Dagger's R&D  designs for Spring 2000.... The Ultrafuge is the radical playboat for small and medium sized paddlers. The outlaw is a boat to play with and paddle the harder stretches.

Freestylekayaker.com has updated his  playboat guide,  info and pics on the dagger Centrifuge en Ultrafuge. Also have a look at the strange designs by  Perception, e.g. Method, Shock, Amp??

Vorige  zondag, park-and-play op de  Ourthe, 2 stuwtjes verkend, ondertussen ook eventjes , raar maar waar park-and-jump. Een kort verslagje volgt waarschijnlijk eind deze week als de fotootjes ontwikkeld zijn.

Varen dit weekend? Zondag zakken we met een paar man af naar de Noord-Frankrijk, 's morgens spelen we aan de Canche nabij Beaurainville en in de vooravond dalen we verder af naar de Somme. 
Weet iemand of er kans is voor een goede golf op de Somme?

Zij die volgend weekend vrijgehouden hadden voor Rock in Cher, die afgelast is, kunnen eventueel naar de Hohenlimburg Rodeo op de Lenne gaan in Duitsland.

Rock in Cher (Fr) op 18-19 maart
is geannulleerd. Er wordt rond gemaild dat er te weinig water is en op de site staat dat er geen toelating was om het te organiseren. Misschien komt er een nieuwe datum. Er wordt uitgekeken naar 8-9 april om een nieuwe toelating te krijgen.
Zij die toch nog de verplaatsing willen maken, kunnen naar 't schijnt toch op de Vague du Talifiau varen.

'k Hoorde zojuist dat ook op de Riot-site een nieuw videootje staat.
Helaas vrees ik dat het alleen voor mensen is die surfen met een snelle verbinding, al hoewel... 't Is een avi down te loaden als zip-file van 24,8 megabyte. Je bent er dus wel een tijdje mee zoet. Maar terwijl ik normaal mp3's download via de kabel aan 50kb per seconde, haalde dit bestandje slechts een snelheid van 15 à 10kb/sec en uiteindelijk slechts 4kb/sec.,    schijnbaar staat het op een trage server of was het een slecht moment?
Daarbij komt nog dat ze blijkbaar heel gul geweest zijn met de intro, de eerste 10 seconden zijn zwart, de volgende 30 gewoon tekst en wat water. Ik moet wel toegeven dat ze dit de volgende 50 seconden ruimschoots compenseren met prachtige shots, 'MTV'-style, van blunts, cartwheels, FREEwheels, steepcreeking, en nog veel meer van dat. Dus eigenlijk wel te gek.
Sorry dat ik effe zo kritisch was.

Just heard that there is a new video on the Riot site.
The only problem is that it's 24,8 megabyte you need to download. And when I did it, I went very slow even with my cable connection.   

I also got to mention there 's a big intro with very little kayaking, but as you reach the second half of the video, it breaks loose, super spectacular, 'MTV'-style, blunts, cartwheels, FREEwheels, steepcreeking, need I go on?

This makes it a great video but it could have been a lot more  internet-user friendly.

Als het al een tijdje geleden is dat je de site van Kayakmag hebt bezocht moet je eens langs gaan. Er zijn hele leuke nieuwe videootjes van rodeosessies in Nieuw Zeeland tijdens en na de Kayak Freestyle Wereld kampioenschappen.
Er zijn ook een aantal interessante intervieuws met Corran Addison en Eric Jakson, beide wereldtop rodeokajakkers. Het zijn nogal lange intervieuws en daarvoor opgesplitst. Ze vertellen hoe ze begonnen zijn met kajakken en geëvolueerd zijn en hoe ze nu boten ontwerpen.

If it's been a while since you surfed by the Kayakmag site, have a look. There are lots of new videos of freestyle sessions during and past the Worlds' last december in New Zealand.
There 're also intervieuws made back then with Corran Addison and Eric Jakson, both toplevel rodeopaddlers, talking about there debute and boatdesign.

Nieuw intervieuw op Outdoorplay.com. Na Corran intervieuwen ze nu Tao Berman, de nieuwe recordhouder voor 't springen van de hoogste waterval, 98.4ft. Ik schat dat dat bijna  zo'n een 30 meter moet zijn, maar verbeter me als ik fout ben. Persoonlijk denk ik dat dit kereltje meer aan SM doet "... I don’t fear pain.… being injured makes me appreciate the times when I’m not....."
En als ge daar toch zijt, checkt dan eens de Prozone, nieuwe rodeo boot van piranha, vooral 't laatste fotootje ziet er leuk uit. Ge kunt dan van den eerste keer ook ne  Centrifuge of nen Ultrafuge van Dagger bestellen.

New intervieuw on Outdoorplay.com, this time with Tao Berman, the new recordholder in jumping the highest waterfall of 98.4 ft, I tnik the is about almost 30 meter? I think this no-fear-guy is into SM , "... I don’t fear pain.… being injured makes me appreciate the times when I’m not....."

And when you're there, check Prozone, the newest Piranha, the last piccy looks nice. Also don't forget to order your new Dagger Centrifuge of nen Ultrafuge.

Vaarverslagje Boven-Lesse 19 dec.'99

Leuk gevaren vorige zondag. Wel één uur en een half file door een zwaar verkeersongeval, een kleine ketting botsing,   veroorzaakt door de sneeuw.
Maar de Boven-Lesse maakte veel goed. Er stond 1m38 aan de Pont des Barbouillons in Daverdisse, dat moet zo'n 1m90 in Houyet geweest zijn. Er was ook veel volk, Gent, Antwerpen, Niel, Brussel, Leuven, Luik, ... Nederlanders, Duitsers en Fransen.
De krokodil (de dubbele passage 1 km voor de Virée du Gève) was een leuke golf met stopper. Normaal is daar een gat, nu was er een korte steile golf, niet zo breed, redelijk snel. Je kon voorwaarts surfen, zijwaarts, heb één maal geflatspinned en een prachtige vertikale backblunt gedaan, voor de  eerste maal, wel redelijk per ongeluk, maar toch de max.
De Virée Du Géve vond ik  niet zo goed. Het bovenste verdiepke spoelde nogal door, en beneden kon ge door de felle stroming niet in de verschillende golfkes. Boven heb ik wel een achterwaartse looping gemaakt, waardoor ik onderste boven doorspoelde, nogal een headbanger, maar rolde terug recht nog voor ik helemaal beneden was.

We hebben wel niet veel gespeeld, met de 10cm verse sneeuw,  was het nogal koud.

Tripreport: Upper Lesse 19 dec.'99

Paddling was good this weekend. We did the Upper Lesse, so did lots of others, paddlers from Ghent, Antwerp, Niel, Brussels, Leuven, Liége, ... also some Dutch, Germans and French paddlers.
There was a  level of 138cm at the Pont des Barbouillons in Daverdisse or something like 190cm in Houyet. At this level the crocodile-passage becomes a nice wave with a stopper. The first time I saw like this. (This is the double passage 1km before the Virée du Gève and 2km before the end.)
It was a steep wave, not broad, normally there's a hole. I could surf it, flatspinned once and did a vertical backblunt, first time, unintendo, ...

The Virée du Gève wasn't good, the upper wave wasn't very sticky and the spot below couldn't be reached due to too strong current.I did a backloop on the upper wave and flushed upside down of the second drop, really a HEADbanger, and rolled back before reaching the end of the second drop, definatly great.

We didn't play much, there was 10 cm of fresh snow, and rather coooooolld.

Nieuwste bootjes: Als de nieuwste van Dagger, de Centrifuge te groot is voor je, kijk dan eens naar de Ultra Fuge. Als je te groot bent voor de Mr Clean, kijk dan uit naar de Ultra Clean van Perception. En als deze je niet aanstaan, ga dan voor Perception's Amp of z'n kleine zus de Shock.Kunt de't nog volgen of  wil de't nie meer volgen?

Veel sneeuw op de Hoge Venen, maar geen water!

Vorige week lag er tenminste 25 cm sneeuw op de Hoge Venen, op sommige plaatsen zelfs meer dan 35 cm. Dit is eind vorige week allemaal gesmolten maar waar is het naartoe gegaan. Er was dit weekend blijkbaar geen water in de bovenlopen en ook geen hoge stijging op de peilschalen.

Waarschijnlijk is het te langzaam gesmolten. Indien het, bij het smelten hevig had geregend, dan gingen we pas leute gehad hebben. En een paar radicale dingen kunnen varen hebben. Maar ooit komt da nog, ...

Ondertussen surfen we maar door en kunt ge eens een kijkje nemen naar het Eifel Rodeo-fotoverslag  dat net online is.

Lots of snow in Belgium on the 'Hoge Venen'.

There was at least 25 cm of snow on the 'Hoge Venen', some places over 35. It all melted last Thursday and Friday. But where did it go? There was no water this weekend and no peak in the waterlevels. 
It probably melted slow over a too long period. If the meltdown would have gone together with some heavy rain, it would have been a radical weekend, being able to do some great stuff. But hey, ... there 'll be a day soon ...

In the meanwhile have fun and take a look at the Eifel Rodeo report I've just pit on.

Reactie op Radical Highs BBC2 van vrijdag 22 oktober.

Best leuk programma, maar 't was nogal kort. Leuk om Hurley nu eens gezien te hebben na er altijd over te lezen in de newsgroup. Eigenlijk is een gewone stuw als vele andere (Neuss,Somme), maar volgens de locals heel goed. De eerste indruk zijn het nogal smalle golfjes, maar dan wel verschillende naast elkaar, met een leuk plateautje om rocksplats,slides en grind op te doen. 

Het stukje watervallen met Shaun Baker was ook wel leuk, maar slechts enkele korte flitsende beelden. Behalve over een grote waterval in IJsland, waar het verhaaltje dat Shaun erbij vertelt spectaculairder is dan de sprong.
Als je ziet welke watervalletjes hij springt zonder water, krijg je wel ideëen om 't één en 't ander uit te proberen op onze 'meestal droge' Ardeense watervalletjes.

Report: Kayak on TV,  Radical Highs BBC2, 22.10.99

Great program but short. Nice finally seeing Hurley after having read about it a thousend times on rpb.uk-newsgroup. Looks like a regular weir as many others, e.g. Neuss in Germany and the Sommein France, but  by the stories I heard Hurley seems very good. First impression, rather narrow waves, but many. Nice concrete wall to do all kinds of splats, slides, grinds.

The part on the waterfalls with Shaun Baker was also nice and short. Some high jumps but only flashy footage, except on a fall in Iceland. Here, the story by Shaun, was twice as spectacular as the jump, ... crazy guy.
After having seen the falls he jumps without water, you might get some idees concerning some of the Belgian 'most-of the-time-without-water'falls.

Birdy in CKM

In de laatste versie van het Franse Canoë et Kayak Magazine schittert Birdy, ik dus, 2 maal. Het verslag van de TOPO VENEON TROPHEE is vergezeld van 2 foto's. Op de groepsfoto vindt U me redelijk op de voorgrond, een beetje verder vindt U ook Piet (rews). Maar op de enige andere foto schitter ik solo, in een poging om de Rapides Photographe stroomopwaarts te varen, of was het nu net anders om? Dit was tijdens m'n eerste manche.
(PS Nu effe niet bescheiden zijn, maar lekker schitteren.)
Van zodra ik een copy heb, zet ik wel een fragmentje online.

Ies, Fokiwa team in CKM

By the way, ies van het Fokiwa team moet niet onderdoen. Ook hij schittert er 2 maal in, maar dan wel in het Rabioux River Festival - artikel. Alhoewel hij dringend even moet nadenken of hij wel de juiste hobby heeft. Hij schittert namelijk tussen auto's, de rode buggy, en vrouwen.

Birdy in CKM

In the latest issue of the French Canoë et Kayak Magazine you can find the report of the TOPO VENEON TROPHEE. This report is illustrated by two photo's. The first shows the whole group of participants, featuring Birdy on fourth or fifth row. The second one shows Birdy solo in an attempt to paddle upstream on the rapides photograph class V, or something like it. The picture was taken during the first head to head race. 
Normally I more the modest type, but now I enjoy the fame. Sadly they didn't mention my name.

Also ies, Fokiwa team, is in it twice. He features in two of the 100 photos of the Rabioux River Festival. Although its a kayaking festival, ies features in it between cars and women. Sure he's got the right hobby?
